A Coffee Renaissance

When Martell Mason returned to metro Detroit in 2020, he found a more hopeful place than the one he’d left 20 years earlier. Yet when he zoomed in on his newfound community’s coffee scene, he realized there was still work to be done.

A Vision for Change

Martell had always been passionate about coffee, and he saw an opportunity to make a positive impact by improving the local coffee industry. He envisioned a future where Detroit could be known not only for its rich history and automotive industry but also for its exceptional coffee culture.

The Birth of Sepia Coffee Project

With this vision in mind, Martell founded the Sepia Coffee Project. The name “Sepia” was inspired by the historic photographic process that gives old photos their distinctive brownish tint. Martell saw the project as a way to honor the city’s past while building a brighter future.

Empowering Local Farmers

One of the main goals of the Sepia Coffee Project is to support and empower local farmers. Martell believes that by establishing direct trade relationships with farmers, they can ensure fair and sustainable practices while also improving the quality of the coffee being produced.

Creating Community Spaces

In addition to working directly with farmers, Sepia Coffee Project is dedicated to creating welcoming community spaces. Martell understands the power of coffee shops as gathering places, where people can come together, share ideas, and build connections. Through the project, he aims to open more coffee shops that provide a warm and inclusive environment for all.

Promoting Education and Training

To further elevate the local coffee scene, Martell understands the importance of education and training. Sepia Coffee Project offers workshops and training programs to aspiring baristas, giving them the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in the industry. By fostering a culture of continuous learning, Martell hopes to raise the standards of coffee preparation in Detroit.

A Blossoming Coffee Culture in Detroit

Since its inception, the Sepia Coffee Project has made significant strides in transforming Detroit’s coffee culture. The project has seen an increase in the number of specialty coffee shops, each with its own unique offerings and flavors. Customers have embraced these new establishments, showing their support for the local coffee community.

A Bright Future Ahead

As the Sepia Coffee Project continues to grow, Martell remains committed to his vision of a vibrant coffee culture in Detroit. He believes that through collaboration, empowerment, and education, they can create lasting change in the industry. With every cup of coffee served, the Sepia Coffee Project moves one step closer to its goal of making Detroit a renowned coffee destination.
